Was able to do 5 of them today:
Can you tell that I enjoyed burning some rings today?
The one on the left makes me think of an Olympic flame. The one in the middle of a pepper mill. The 4th one of an Imperial Storm Trooper from "Star Wars". The one on the right makes me think of an atomic bomb blast.
Also I had time to drill a block of 2x4 to hold what has been done so far:
Im now about halfway done with what Im giving as Christmas gifts.

My hubby and I have been married for 20 years and for 20 of those years, I have longed for an old hutch, just like the one in my grandmas kitchen. Every time we would come across one, it was too expensive or just wasnt exactly what we wanted. My luck was about to change.
While visiting a local flea market on Saturday, I walked to the back of the store and saw this.
One look and I was immediately transported back to my grandmas kitchen. The sounds, smells, and all the things I loved about her and her kitchen immediately came to mind. When the owner came over to talk to me, all I could manage to say was, "I want this."
I called my hubby and he came down to check it out. We worked out a deal with the owners, packed it up and brought it home. I was a happy girl. :)
Of course, it needed some work, but thats what I liked about it. Although I liked the sunny yellow paint, it wouldnt really fit in with the decor in our home so I had to paint it white.
You know Im not crazy about scroll work so I needed to do something to remove or cover it on the top. I also needed to update the door hardware. The hardware on the drawers was perfect and didnt need anything.
I decided to add crown molding to the top so I added a 1 x 4 to the top in between the two sides or scroll work. I attached it with a nail gun.
Next, I cut a piece of crown molding and attached it to the 1 x 4 that I just attached on the front and mitered the corners to wrap around the sides of the hutch.
As you can see, there are gaps but thats why caulk is the best thing ever for a DIYer. It covers a multitude of sins. I learned how to cut mitered corners and returns about 9 years ago and every time I cut them, I forget how and have to buy extra molding to practice on. That whole thing of turning your molding upside down and cutting at 45 degrees confuses me every time. Im sure there is an easier way and possibly a better saw for the job but I dont know what it is. After I caulked the gaps, and filled the nail gun holes with spackle, I started painting and adding the new door pulls.
Heres how she looks now.
I had two sea grass baskets that I picked up at Lowes a few months ago that fit perfectly on the second shelf. I filled them with my collection of linen vintage napkins. I also added my coffee sacks and more vintage linens. Plus my collection of old mismatched flatware that hubby brought me.
As well as my treasured french compote that I picked up on Etsy.
See how nicely the crown molding turned out after filling the gaps with caulk?
Heres a closeup of the drawer pulls. I thought they matched the original drawer pulls perfectly.
As you can see, I sanded the edges a little to let a tiny bit of the cheery yellow paint shine through.
I couldnt resist. :)
(Try not to look at the huge vent and thermostat on the the wall.)
I had to do some rearranging in the dining room but that was fine with me. I still have the shelf I built from reclaimed barn wood, I just moved it to another corner.
So, after 20 years, we finally have a hutch that also reminds me of spending time with my grandma.
Thats the best part....
Have a great day!

I'm kinda jazzed I finally picked up one of these Campaign desks
w/the faux bamboo!! This one is made by Dixie!! Even better!
I know,,,,,right??!! What the???!! So, I asked the women selling, "Oh, you started to
refinish (refinish?? more like mutilate) it?"
Her: "Yeah"
Me: "Um, what did you use on the top?"
Her: "Oh, a scraper."
Me: Audible gasp..........
Her: "Was that bad?"
Um, Gee,......Ya think???!!!!
I actually think the surface of the moon feels smoother than the top of this desk.
Running my hand over the top and feeling all the divots and gouges just makes me

Hey there! I have been an absent blogger lately, right? Ive been so busy and the weather has been just lovely, so its been hard to plop myself down in front of the computer. Our kiddos are just about finished with school for the summer and I. Cant. Wait! No more getting up at the crack of dawn to get everyone out the door on time. Staying up late and sleeping in.
But best of all, spending time with my kids.
We love summer!!
So, Ive been busy doing more fun projects around the exterior of our house. See, after 6 years of wanting needing a privacy fence in our back yard, we finally put one up and couldnt be happier. It looks so much better and as a result, Ive been adding things weve always wanted to here and there. Starting with landscaping the side of our home. Its always been rather dull so we took the plunge there, too. We waited until shrubs went on sale for half price so landscaping the side wasnt costly, just a little hard work.
Last year my boys gave me a hydrangea bush for my birthday that I planted along this side, however, it needed some company, so we added some white azaleas, a favorite of mine. I still thought there was something missing and have always wanted window boxes, but didnt want to spend the money or buy the typical iron variety. My good friend Lisa, who also happens to be my neighbor, made the coolest window box for her gorgeous front window a few years ago and Ive always admired it. So, I did what all good friends do, I shamelessly copied it. :) Heres how I made mine.
The only thing I bought for this project was the pots and flowers. Actually, my wonderful hubby bought them for me for Mothers Day. :)
Everything else was scrap around our house.
I started with 1 x 12s that I cut to be the same length as the lower ledge of the window.
Then I took my pots, turned them upside down and placed them on the wood, then traced with a pen.
For the long double window, I needed 4 pots so I evenly spaced them and traced. Do NOT cut yet!
The next step is to trace another circle inside that one that is about a 1/4 inch smaller in diameter. The pot will sit inside the circle at the lip. Then I cut each circle out with a jig saw.
After lightly sanding the rough edges, I painted the entire piece white. Notice the almost finished fence! I also was able to remove the chicken wire fence I put around our veggie garden to keep the deer out. Yay!
Set the boards aside and let dry. Next up are the brackets the ledge will sit on. I already had 4 of these from another project but I wanted them to be a little sturdier so I added a piece of 1 x 3 to the back of each one and secured with screws.
Then I painted those white, as well. After they are dry, I attached them right under the window leaving about an inch gap between the top of the bracket and the under side of the window ledge for the top to fit in. Next I placed the ledges on top of the secured brackets, secured them with screws to the brackets, and placed the pots that I filled with the gorgeous red flowers inside. Heres how it looks.
And the other window.
I LOVE them! I think what inspired me to do this was the lovely chocolate terra cotta pots available now. I am crazy about them and wanted to find a way to showcase them. Hopefully, the window ledges take your eye away from the ugly electrical garbage on this side of the house. I cant wait till these bushes have filled in a little and are full of beautiful flowers.
So thats it! Thank you to my friend, Lisa for the great idea!
Happy Summer!
